About

Hi we’re Coinbase!

Coinbase was founded in June 2012 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam. Later in 2012, Coinbase started allowing customers to buy and sell bitcoin via bank transfers. Coinbase has grown into one of the highest volume cryptocurrency exchanges, offering trading for Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, XRP, and its own USD Coin. Coinbase has grown through a series of large-scale investments (including a $300m Series E round) and a number of acquisitions, including Neutrino, Paradex, Xapo, and Earn.com.

As a leading contributor and playmaker in the cryptocurrency and blockchain space, Coinbase has produced a number of products and services across multiple industries which serve both individuals and corporate enterprises alike. These services include the Coinbase exchange, pro trading services, a wallet, custody solutions, a retail portal, and the USDC stablecoin to name a few (see further info in product section). On March 30th, Coinbase Commerce, their retail platform just passed $200 million in total transactions processed over its two-year history.

Coinbase also operates a venture arm, dubbed Coinbase Ventures which currently invests in projects that are contributing to an open financial system. To date, Coinbase Ventures has made over 50 project investments, such as BlockFi, Etherscan, Dharma, Abacus and Matic to name a few.

As part of its SEC filing to go public, Coinbase reported 43 million verified users, 7,000 institutions and 115,000 ecosystem partners in over 100 countries. On April 14th 2021, Coinbase went public on the nasdaq exchange.
