About

Hi we’re BNY Mellon Blockchain!

BNY Mellon Blockchain is a blockchain initiative by global investments company BNY Mellon around the topic of blockchain and DLT adoption. As of March 31, 2019 BNY Mellon had $34.5 trillion in assets under custody and/or administration, and $1.9 trillion in assets under management. BNY can act as a single point of contact for clients looking to create, trade, hold, manage, service, distribute, or restructure investments.

BNY Mellon have a dedicated Blockchain team and have been involved in a number of blockchain initiatives. The teams key focus is on developing partnerships with startups, accelerators, incubators and business partners to drive enterprise innovation and build ecosystems for all BNY Mellon blockchain initiatives.

Since 2015, BNY Mellon have been involved in a number of Proof of Concepts and Pilots, ranging from use cases involving blockchain-based US treasury bond settlements (a project that has been up and running since 2016), bitcoin rewards, B2B payments, partnering with the digital custody company Bakkt, as well as utilizing DLT for its own internal record keeping.

More notably, BY Mellon also co-founded the Utility Settlement Coin Initiative (now called Fnality International), a consortium that focuses on issuing digital currencies on the blockchain. Around May 2019, BNY Mellon partnered with the Intercontinental Exchange to provide private key storage for crypto assets.

In September 2019, Coindesk published an article stating that Bitwise has tapped Bank of New York Mellon to serve as the administrator and transfer agent for its proposed bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF).
BNY Mellon has also launched a test system called BDS360, which leverages blockchain technology to create a backup record of its brokerage transactions. This new system, which operates alongside BNY’s existing transaction records system, aims to provide an operational buffer in the event that the first layer of transaction records becomes unavailable.
